Since Bayern Munich announced that Thomas Tuchel will be departing the club at the end of the campaign, there has been considerable speculation regarding who would succeed the former Borussia Dortmund head coach.
However, with Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso committing his future to the Werkself, Bayern have failed to land their number one target. Therefore, Der Rekordmeister have had to look elsewhere for their next head coach.
Despite Brighton & Hove Albion’s Roberto De Zerbi emerging as a possible candidate, there are a plethora of other European clubs looking to appoint the Italian, with Juventus the current front-runner for his signature. Therefore, this has led to rumours circulating about whether Julian Nagelsmann would return to Bavaria.
When questioned about Bayern at the national coaches’ European Championship workshop in Düsseldorf, Nagelsmann commented:
“I don’t have a written offer, and there have been no talks. I’m still in the phase where I’m thinking about what’s next from a professional perspective. I think it’s normal to take everything into account and discuss everything. Then there will be a decision at some point; I don’t have a fixed date yet.”
“I think there are a few clubs and a few things that might come along at some point, but at the moment it’s not like I have anything ready to sign where I can say, ‘Ok, now I’ll do it ‘. But I’m still in the phase of thinking about what’s next.”
Since taking over duties as the head coach of Germany, the national team have improved drastically under the stewardship of Nagelsmann, leading to speculation as to whether he would remain in the role beyond the summer. With Rudi Völler recently extending his contract at the DFB, Nagelsmann could consider his future to be with Germany too, but Bayern certainly remains a possible destination.
