Niclas Füllkrug is enduring somewhat of a goal drought. With no goals in his last nine games for Borussia Dortmund across all competitions, the German forward has been on the receiving end of some public criticism in the past week. However, Edin Terzic backs his No. 9 to find his scoring form again.
On Saturday, Borussia Dortmund travel to Mönchengladbach. It’s a fixture that has seen 25 goals in their last four Bundesliga meetings and speaking ahead of the tie in his pre-match press conference, Terzic discussed Füllkrug.
“If you’re a striker for Borussia Dortmund and haven’t scored in nine games, that’s of course a public issue,” said Terzic. “We talked again during the week. One thing is the goals, the other is that you always put yourself at the service of the team. If you do that, scoring goals will come again.”
Terzic also praised the “hard-working” Füllkrug, who puts maximum effort into training both during and after, stating that “if he keeps working like this, it won’t be long before he gets through this phase.”
Could Sébastien Haller start?
One option for Terzic would be to bring Sébastien Haller back into the starting eleven. The Ivorian recently returned from an ankle injury after the player’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph and has appeared as a substitute in his last three games.
An assist against Bayern Munich, Haller also replaced Füllkrug after the hour mark against Atletico Madrid in midweek. 2-0 down, the 29-year-old pulled a goal back to keep Borussia Dortmund in the tie.
