Real Madrid dipped into the Turkish market last summer to sign Arda Guler from Fenerbahce in a deal that could end up costing €25 million. This season it looks like they may be returning for another 18-year-old prospect from Turkey.
A little less high profile is the goalkeeper Onuralp Cevikkan of Trabzonspor, but is widely regarded as the next big thing in Turkish goalkeeping. Like Sabah, and brought by AS Diary, Real Madrid they submitted an offer of 10 million euros for Cevikkan, who only joined Trabzonspor last summer for 700 thousand euros from Altinordo.
Already at 190cm (6ft 2), Cevikkan has yet to make his debut for Trabzonspor, and is currently considered their third-choice goalkeeper, having made six call-ups this season. His plan is to use it for Real Madrid Castilla before developing for the first team. Where he has impressed is in his three under-18 caps for Turkey, where he made a series of fine saves against Spain in a 1-1 draw last October.
It is not yet clear how Trabzonspor responded, but it is yet more evidence of Real Madrid's growing desire to become the best scouts of elite young talent in the world. The signings of Guler and Endrick Felipe are a sure sign that they feel it is a strategy that can give them an advantage in a market where they no longer have the greatest resources.
