Real Madrid is in the semi-finals of the Champions League. They drew 1-1 with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium, which meant a 4-4 stalemate on aggregate, before winning 4-3 on penalties.
It was a dream start for Real Madrid as they struck first in the opening quarter of an hour. Great work from Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde saw Vinicius Junior play on, and his excellent cross was met by Rodrygo Goes. His initial shot was saved by the countryman Ederson, but he kicked the ball home on the second attempt.
After that moment, Real Madrid looked to sit down and frustrate Man City. It almost worked, though the host managed to find a way in the 78th minute. The ball cleared Antonio Rudiger in the path of Kevin de Bruyne, who made no mistake from close range to fire into the roof of Andriy Lunin's net.
No more goals came in the rest of the 90, not even in extra time, which meant penalties were called for. Andriy Lunin proved to be the hero for Real Madrid, as he was saved by Bernardo Silva and former Los Blancos midfielder Mateo Kovacic. Antonio Rudiger scored the winning penalty, sparking wild scenes at the away end.
It means that Real Madrid will play Bayern Munich in the semi-finals, as they defeated Arsenal in their quarter-finals. The Blancos certainly loved their chances of winning title number 15 in this competition.
