However, Van Gaal's subsequent departure as head coach meant Jose Mourinho He handed over the Old Trafford bench in a move that would mean the end of this stage in Manchester.

The German was a recent guest on Neville's Stick to Football podcast and revealed how his final season under Mourinho unfolded, much to Neville's despair.

“It was 2016 and I was with the German team, we went far in the competition (European Championship) reaching the semi-finals, so I joined a little later (at Manchester United) and the team was in the United States for a while. pre-season tour,” Schweinsteiger told former United captain Neville.

“When I arrived the first day I trained with Zlatan Ibrahimovic And I thought he was great, a player who has the vision and is incredible to play with.

“The next day, on my birthday, when I walked into Carrington, John Murtough (Manchester United director of football) was there and told me I couldn't go into the dressing room, the manager had said so. No warning, nothing.

“I don't know (why he told me that). Someone could have told me there (on my first day of training) or explained it to me in a normal way, but hey, I went to the youth locker room and trained with the under 16 team.”

Neville was stunned by the German's revelation, not understanding why Murtough had informed him of the banishment.

Schweinsteiger then added that Murtough was forced to bring him his boots and training clothes due to being kicked out of the first team dressing room.

Schweinsteiger was one of United's most important figures in the dressing room alongside Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

“I asked him who he was training with and he told me it was the under-16 team, so I went and trained with the under-16s,” Schweinsteiger said.

“I asked him if I could talk to the coach in the afternoon, so when I came back from training with the Under-16s, where I trained so badly because I didn't know what was happening or it was a joke, I told him Then I had a meeting with (Mourinho ) in the afternoon.

Gary Neville shakes his head as he recalls the “awkward” phone call between Glenn Hoddle and Sir Alex Ferguson while he was injured on duty in England.

“He explained to me that I didn't see myself happy here at United because when I had the injury I did my rehabilitation with German doctors, spending time in Germany.

“I was training alone for at least three months with a physical trainer,” he added. “I trained before and after the first team.

“Mourinho never let me train with the first team. I guess they wanted to get rid of me. At that time I was still super happy at United, I loved wearing the shirt, I loved it.

“I was thinking maybe it was just a period, I will train now and stay fit and maybe one day they will change their mind. My dream was always to return to Old Trafford.”

Neville was outraged by what he was hearing and called his former employers' actions “illegal.”

“I was the union rep for the PFA and you're not allowed to do that,” Neville said. “You can't fire someone that way; in a way, it's a constructive dismissal.”

“It's probably too late, you should have come to see me at that time. “I am stunned and embarrassed by what I hear because I always think that players leave clubs and people fight, but there is a way to do things and a way to behave and act.”

Schweinsteiger revealed that Mourinho eventually apologized for demoting him, although too late to repair the fractured relationship.
