Man United ‘receive significant FFP windfall’ from January transfer after Borussia Dortmund reach Champions League semi-finals
Borussia Dortmund‘s advance to the final four of this season’s Champions League is an unexpected boost to Manchester United’s FFP situation.
The German side progressed to the semi-finals after defeating Atletico Madrid 5-4 on aggregate on Tuesday night, and now face PSG for a place in the final at Wembley.
However, it is also good news for the financial situation at Man United, and new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, as the club will receive a hefty knock-on bonus as a result of Dortmund’s good fortune.
A source for Manchester United told the Manchester Evening News that a ‘significant’ bonus has been activated with Dortmund’s appearance in the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Dortmund paid €3.5m (£3m) up-front to take Jadon Sancho on loan in January, with a potential €4m (£3.4m) in additional add-ons, some of which have been triggered by their European run.

It all benefits Man United’s position regarding financial fair play rules and the Premier League‘s Profit and Sustainability Rules which have become major discussion points in recent months.
There could be more to come Man United’s way too, if Dortmund can get past PSG over two legs in the coming weeks and reach the European showpiece at Wembley on June 1.
Sancho joined Man United for £73million in 2021 from Borussia Dortmund, but made a temporary return in the January transfer window until the end of the campaign.
Since Sancho returned to his old German club, the 24-year-old has started all four of their Champions League knockout games, as they have defeated PSV Eindhoven and then Atletico Madrid to reach this stage.
Sancho’s loan to Dortmund ends on June 30, and the club have no option to make a permanent move.
It is expected that Man United will sell Sancho in the summer, after his public falling out with Erik ten Hag earlier in the season.
After Tuesday’s win, Rio Ferdinand insisted that Sancho ‘would not have seen’ his spot in a Champions League semi-finals coming.
‘We asked for Sancho to put in a performance, Ferdinand began. ‘A lot to prove and he’s showing it.

Chelsea star Ian Maatsen is reportedly keen to join Borussia Dortmund on a permanent basis
‘He’s left Manchester United under a cloud, he’s now in a Champions League semi-final against PSG. Who could have written that script? He wouldn’t have seen that coming.’
Chelsea’s Ian Maatsen is also on loan at Borussia Dortmund this season, and has expressed his desire to remain with the club after a successful short-term stint in Germany.
