Nottingham Forest consultant Mark Clattenburg criticizes PGMOL for howlers hat-trick against Everton

Mark Clattenburg says Nottingham Forest have felt a “victim” of the PGMOL.

The former Premier League referee, Forest match and performance analyst, spoke out against the decisions made in the club's 2-0 defeat in their six-point relegation match against Everton on Sunday.

Idrissa Gueye and Dwight McNeil fired the Toffees within three much-needed points, but Forest were aggrieved by a series of decisions in the game.

Fans and pundits alike were completely stunned when the club issued a fiery statement on their official X full-time account, highlighting that the PGMOL of displaying a Luton Town fan in Stuart Attwell to work with the VAR, with the Hatters also battling relegation.

talkSPORT understands Clattenburg spoke to PGMOL on Forest's behalf about Attwell's choice and his loyalty before the game, but did not request that the referee be removed from the game and there were no pre-match issues.

Clattenburg was later they told him to resign by Gary Neville on Sky Sports and encouraged him to distance himself from the statement with the Football Association investigating it.

Instead, he has now doubled down on Forest's stance.

Clattenburg wrote in his daily mail column: “One of these mistakes would have been bad enough. Three were a joke, and that's why Nottingham Forest They felt victimized after another loss in which no major decision went their way.

“In a season where they have had to endure some atrocious refereeing, this trip to Everton was the bleakest game they have seen since returning to the Premier League.”

Finally, on Young challenging Hudson-Odoi from behind as the latter burst into the area, he said: “Referee Anthony Taylor apparently told the players on the field that both Young and Hudson-Odoi touched the ball.

“Television replays told a very different story and VAR Stuart Attwell had to send Taylor for a second look to correct his decision. He didn't do so. There was no visit to the monitor. No penalties were awarded.”

Forest's defeat at Goodison Park leaves them in 17th place, just one point behind third from bottom Luton.

The Premier League season is far from over, with just under a month left to go.

However, Clattenburg believes PGMOL's Howlers hat-trick has already had a big impact on his club's relegation battle.

He continued: “These situations were precisely why video technology was introduced in the Premier League and yet Attwell did not send Taylor to his monitor. Not once. It was a hat-trick of team howlers refereeing and, unfortunately for Forest, a continuation of an unfair trend that has hampered their fight for survival.

“You will have seen the statement issued by the club – how the PGMOL was contacted to advise that it was inappropriate for a Luton fan like Attwell to play such a pivotal role in a massive match that would affect the relegation race.

“I certainly wouldn't have risked this situation if I were chief referee and all of this could have been avoided if the PGMOL had simply made smarter appointments.

“Referees don't deliberately make mistakes, but it was mind-blowing to watch. Why Attwell didn't send Taylor to his screen, only he will know.

“The PGMOL can acknowledge the errors if they wish. The key match incidents panel can say that Forest should have received three penalties if they wish. Howard Webb can offer an explanation on his TV show Match Officials Mic'd Up with michael owen if you wish.

“All of that will surely happen, but none of that will help Nottingham Forest now.”
