Simon Jordan takes brutal swipe at Arsenal in front of Martin Keown in tense discussion on talkSPORT
Simon Jordan labeled Arsenal the Premier League 'bottlers' during a tense discussion on talkSPORT with Martin Keown.
The Gunners led the Premier League title race for most of last season, but Man City lifted the trophy for the third year in a row.
Poor form at the end of the campaign proved to be the deciding factor for Arsenalwhich at one point was eight points clear at the top.
Mikel Arteta's men host Liverpool on Sunday in a huge clash in this season's title race, with the north Londoners five points behind the table-topping Reds.
Speaking before the match, the Arsenal legend Keown He said his former club has a chance to close the gap with a win, but Jordan made a brutal claim about the Gunners' position against their rivals.
It turned out to be a tense argument between the two live on talkSPORT and you can read how it unfolded below…
Jordan: “It's an interesting framing of the conversation because it's the league leaders against the league bottlenecks, so what we're trying to understand is whether Arsenal can overcome that.
“If Liverpool win this game, which I propose to them, and I know the FA Cup game will be the model for Arsenal, they were very dominant in the first half and created a lot of chances, but…”
Keown: “Do you think professional athlete, we are in an arena here with a lot of boxers, do you think they get bottled up?”
Jordan: “Yes, of course”.
Keown: “I don't think so, I don't think so at all, I think they do their best.”
Jordan: “Giving your best and bottling it up are not mutually exclusive.”
Keown: “We are looking at Manchester City, they have five trophies on the side of the pitch, Sheffield United could barely get on the pitch, there were so many trophies on the bench, so we are looking at a team that might be one.” in a million computers, the era we are seeing now…”
Jordan: “So when you're at the top of the league and you're in a matchup and your fate is in your own hands and you start losing games against teams that are nowhere near your quality, how would you classify that? like?”
“I would say it was a psychological weakness that they didn't overcome, the adversity of the opportunity to win the league. Manchester City won the league because Arsenal gave it back to them.”
Keown: “Manchester City had an incredible run, you have to admit, but what they did at the end of the season was also put Arsenal to the sword.”
Jordan: “The matches between Arsenal and Man City did not determine the outcome of the league.
“You could see the difference between the two teams because in the first game Manchester City was better offensively and in the second game, defensively, Arsenal were bad at the Etihad because they had Rob Holding as a centre-back.
“The point is that they didn't lose the league because of the two games they lost against Man City, but they lost the league because they had a run of games against incidental teams, which is bottling everything up.”
Keown: “(William) Saliba was not available and Arsenal were suddenly conceding a lot more goals, the number of shot conversions… it was a different situation for Arsenal. What it shows is that the team was not strong enough. ..”
Jordan: “Mentally you were bottling it up.”
Keown: “We may be in the same territory here because it is a very small team that Arsenal have at the moment. (Thomas) Partey is not available, (Jurrien) Timber is not available, (Fabio) Vieira is not available.
“By the way, Marquinhos has returned from his loan spell, the young Brazilian is on the wing, and I hope (Arteta) uses him. (Emile) Smith Rowe had a chance in midweek and I hope he gets another.”
