Overall, it has been quite a successful season for Mallorca. They may still be in the relegation battle, sitting six points adrift of 18th-placed Cadiz, but they had a sensational run to the Copa del Rey final, where they lost agonizingly on penalties against Athletic Club .
Javier Aguirre has overseen that cup run, although there is a decent chance the Mexican coach will no longer be in charge at Mallorca from next season. His contract expires in the summer, and so far, negotiations have yet to take place.
Despite the fact that he will be out of contract for less than two months, Aguirre is relaxed about the situation, as he told the media on Friday (via AS Diary).
“They didn't talk to me, and they don't need to because the goal (avoiding relegation) hasn't been achieved yet. I insist that I'm happy here. It's a club that called me at a difficult time and I'm happy . I have an excellent relationship with the court, with the owner, with the players. I think that I am in the ideal place, but the most sensible thing to do is to focus on the league, get the necessary points for safety and once whatever happens, the most sensible thing to do will be to sit down and talk.”
It makes perfect sense that the matter be dealt with once the pressure is off, although there is no doubt that many Majorca supporters will be desperate to see Aguirre renew as soon as possible.
