Bayer Leverkusen’s 5-1 win at Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday afternoon means the Bundesliga club are now 48 games unbeaten across all competitions, making history as they match Benfica’s record of being unbeaten in all competitions between December 1963 and February 1965.
Although Xabi Alonso was suspended after picking up his fourth yellow card in Die Werkself’s 2-2 draw against Stuttgart last weekend, the Spaniard watched on in the press tribune as his side strolled to victory in Hessen.
Granit Xhaka opened the scoring before Hugo Ekitike equalised, but Eintracht’s poor finishing ultimately cost them, as they had chances to take the lead with the score level at 1-1.
But Patrik Schick put his side back in the lead just before the break, before Exequiel Palacios, Jeremie Frimpong and Victor Boniface put the game beyond any doubt in the second-half.

Leverkusen host AS Roma in the second-leg of the Europa League semi-final on Thursday with the German side holding a 2-0 lead. With a European cup final on the cards, Bayer then have games against Bochum and Augsburg in the Bundesliga before a DFB Pokal final against Kaiserslautern in May at the end of the month.
It’s been quite the season for Alonso and Co. but the feeling is that it’s not over yet. An unbeaten campaign is certainly on the cards.
