The 21-year-old joined Man City in the summer of 2020 following interest from Barcelona and much of the time has passed since he was on loan.

During that time he spent three seasons on loan at Girona, playing a key role in Spain's surprise package this term.

Girona challenged real Madrid for the LaLiga title this season and, as a result, are firmly on course to secure the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Playing primarily as a right midfielder, Couto scored two goals and provided ten assists for his teammates, generating significant European interest.

Couto has not yet played a game with the first team pep guardiola's team, something that is unlikely to change as Manchester City are not in a position to guarantee him first-team football next season.

This is largely due to the unstoppable presence of Kyle Walker at right back, with Rico Lewis and John Stones also capable of filling that role.

As a result, Man City could be willing to cash in on the player.

It is understood that if City were to sell they could command a fee of around £40m, the fee former City defender Pedro Porro paid when he left Sporting Lisbon for Tottenham last year.

Porro had spent two years on loan with the Portuguese side before signing for £7.2m, a fee that was dwarfed just 12 months later when he joined Ange Postecoglou's side permanently.

Porro rose through the ranks at Girona and then signed for City in 2019 but, like Couto, never appeared for the Premier League champions' senior team.

He spent three years at the Etihad Stadium before moving permanently to Sporting, then returned to the Premier League with Spurs just a year later.

City racked up £10m in selling fees as part of the deal, and it looks like they could try to do the same with Couto this summer with a host of suitors doing the rounds.
