When Marco Reus joined Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2012, many people would not have foreseen the emotional rollercoaster that would follow his career at the club. For every exhilarating high, there were many heartbreaking lows for the former poster boy of German football.
However, throughout all of this, he remained beloved by the Dortmund faithful, and on June 1, he could receive the most deserving of send-offs. Nevertheless, Real Madrid stand in Dortmund and Reus’ way.
Normally, Bayern Munich are the side that leave Reus and BvB wondering what could have been. Whether it be the 2013 Champions League final or a number of German championships, Der Rekordmeister always have a way of coming out on top.
Nonetheless, this time, they have no say, and if Dortmund can continue to perform as they have in the Champions League, then they will overcome Real Madrid. Since garnering underdog status when the groups were announced, BvB have proven time and time again that they can go toe-to-toe with any side in Europe.
Therefore, if they are to be crowned champions of Europe, then, according to Bild, Marco Reus could receive the ultimate farewell. It is understood that there is internal consideration at the club of asking captain Emre Can to allow Reus to lift the Champions League trophy should Dortmund prevail.
If this were to happen, then all the wrongs that have occurred during Reus’ time at the Westfalenstadion would be forgotten. A player that will go down as one of, if not the greatest Dortmund players of all time, would depart the club in the most fairytale of endings.
