The El Ghazi case has come to a head at Mainz. The German club has published on its official website the dismissal of the Dutch footballer of Moroccan descent Anwar El Ghazi for statements in support of Palestine that he posted on his social networks on October 17.

The player, far from reconsidering his position as suggested by the club, remarked in another statement that he did not regret his decision.

“I do not distance myself from what I said and I support, today and until my last breath, humanity and the oppressed” wrote El Ghazi, who has only played three games this season.

It was then that Mainz stated that it was going to study these facts legally to evaluate them and finally this has led to the dismissal of the footballer.

“1. FSV Mainz 05 terminates the contractual relationship with Anwar El Ghazi and dismissed the player with immediate effect on Friday. The club takes this measure in view of the player’s statements and postings on social media,” the German side stated on its official website.

The footballer has responded on his Instagram account to the dismissal, with a message in which he again showed his support for the people of Gaza.

“Stand up for what is right, even if it means standing alone. The loss of my livelihood is nothing compared to the hell being unleashed on the innocent and vulnerable in Gaza. Stop the killing.”
