United beat the Gunners at Old Trafford earlier in the season to end their 49-match unbeaten run, with the latter unhappy with tackles and fouls during the match.

Scallop made his feelings clear Neville in the Highbury tunnel in the second leg and provoked a reaction of Keane, who shouted 'See you around!' and he said he should 'keep his damn mouth shut'.

And 19 years after their dispute, the couple reunited in the Stay with football podcast to remember the incident and the former Arsenal captain made an honest admission.

“The context of this is… we're warming up before the game, this didn't start here in the tunnel, I'm practicing my headers, Patrick is doing what he does there,” Neville said.

“So I run through the Highbury tunnel, a narrow tunnel, and I can hear those bangs behind me and him (Vieira) shouting my name, 'Hey, you!' or something like that.

“He ran after me in the tunnel and said, 'You're not kicking our bloody players today' or something, do you remember that, Patrick?”

Vieira responded, “That was planned by me. Because of the nine years I spent there, I didn't like you at all.”

“It's true, honestly, I couldn't stand you because you were kicking everyone and especially Robert (Pires). No (it wasn't Phil Neville), it was him, I'm 100 percent sure, and in that game I was like, 'I have to make yourself aware that today you are not going to touch Robert.'

“Because I knew that was the plan for you because you fought Robert and I was like, 'No, I'm going to have to tell you today, leave him alone.'”

He added: “I felt like you went too far against him. Robert was very kind, he just stepped forward, but he's too kind to complain. And I think at that point you went too far and it was too much and it was very obvious.”

Roy Keane remembers being thrown out of a pub window but still kept his bottle of wine after moving to Manchester United from Nottingham Forest.

Vieira then joked: “Obviously because United controlled all the referees and all that… so you had so much power that you were allowed to do what you really wanted to do.”

“So for me, I had it planned in my mind, it was like the warm-up, I see you go into the tunnel, I'll run after you. I saw you running, going into the tunnel, and I just ran after you and I just wanted to make you aware that today will be different.”

Keane also weighed in on the story when he said: “I came down and something was going on, there were noises but I forgot the bracelet.

“So that's why I went back to the tunnel… but when I came back the second time, I knew something had happened, obviously what you said earlier. I was actually pretty relaxed about it, because I never used to get involved in things.” in the tunnel.”

He added: “I was agitated. What would make me angry would be that you went after Nev, you went after Gary… but if you go after one, you'll go after all of us.”

United beat Arsenal 4-2 in a match that will forever go down in the history of the iconic club rivalry.
