John McGinn and Scotland suffered a disappointing start to their European Championship campaign as they fell to a 5-1 defeat against Germany.

The Aston Villa captain completed 67 minutes of the Euro 2024 opener in Munich as the Tartan Army were undone by the tournament hosts.

Goals from Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz, from the penalty spot, put Germany into a commanding lead at half-time, with Scotland reduced to 10 men just before the break following Ryan Porteous’ dismissal.

Niclas Fullkrug added a fourth after the restart before Antonio Rudiger’s own goal grabbed a late consolation for Steve Clarke’s side, Emre Can wrapping up the scoring in injury time.

Scotland will look to get their Group A campaign back on track against Switzerland on Wednesday (ko 8pm) in Cologne.
