Youri Tielemans found the net for Belgium after just 73 seconds as they secured a 2-0 victory over Romania at Euro 2024 on Saturday night.

Tielemans became the first Aston Villa player to score at a European Championship since Marcus Allback netted for Sweden in 2004.

It was his eighth goal for Belgium in what was his 69th cap, with the midfielder competing at his fourth major international tournament.

Tielemans won possession in the middle of the park before then arriving on the edge of the penalty area, receiving a lay-off from Romelu Lukaku and firing home a well-taken right-footed strike from the edge of the area.

It capped a high-tempo start for Belgium, who added a second in the 79th minute through Kevin De Bruyne to take all three points from a pulsating encounter in Cologne.

Following defeat in their tournament opener against Slovakia, victory leaves Group E wide open with all four teams on three points ahead of Belgium’s final match against Ukraine on Wednesday in Stuttgart (ko 5pm).
