Ruud van Nistelrooy has had positive talks about joining Erik ten Hag's coaching staff, talkSPORT understands.
Manchester United's priority is to agree a new contract with Ten Hag, but they also know that bringing back icon Van Nistelrooy would be a huge benefit for fans.
The Dutchman has also been interviewed to fill the vacant Burnley manager position after Vincent Kompany's move to Bayern Munich.
However, the former striker is keen on a role at Old Trafford.
Van Nistelrooy played for Man United from 2001 to 2006, scoring 150 goals in 219 appearances for the club before joining Real Madrid.
He has been out of work since leaving as PSV Eindhoven coach in May 2023.
