Van Nistelrooy is understood to have signed a two-year contract and an official announcement of his return to the Premier League club is expected imminently.

Rene Hake also joins the Ten Hag coaching team and was at Carrington on Monday morning.

Both Van Nistelrooy and Hake have extensive experience and have coached at the highest level in their native Holland.

Hake has left his post at Go Ahead Eagles, which he led to ninth place in the Eredivisie last season, to join his old friend Ten Hag.

The pair previously worked together at FC Twente's academy.

Van Nistelrooy, for his part, is well known to English football fans.

He played for Manchester United between 2001 and 2006, scoring 150 goals in 219 appearances for the club before signing for real Madrid.

The Dutchman helped the club to a Premier League title, as well as an FA Cup and a League Cup during his time at the club.

After retiring from the game in 2021, he went on to work in PSV Eindhoven at their academy and eventually became head coach in May 2023.

After winning the 2022–23 KNVB Cup, he resigned with one game remaining in the 2022–23 Eredivisie season, citing a lack of support from the board.

He recently interviewed for the vacant manager position at Burnley following Vincent Kompany's signing for Bayern Munich.

The changes to Manchester United's coaching staff come after it was confirmed that Ten Hag Continue as boss next season, Despite enormous speculation about his future.
