Jurgen Klopp coaching the United States is “almost impossible” because he would have to accept a massive pay cut

The chances of Jürgen Klopp taking charge of the US national team are “almost impossible.”

That is the opinion of German football expert Constantin Eckner, who believes the USMNT could not afford to hire the German coach.

But speaking on talkSPORT's Euro GameDay Warm-Up show, Eckner says that is unlikely to be an option as he would have to take a massive pay cut on the £15m-a-year he received in his final Liverpool contract.

Asked if we will see Klopp as manager again, Eckner said: “I don't doubt it.

“I don't think I'll be the U.S. national coach because it's almost impossible.

“Last year they introduced an equal pay policy and Emma Hayes – who manages the US women's national team – receives $2 million a year, meaning Klopp would also earn $2 million a year.

“I don't think that's an offer I would accept.”

With England also potentially looking for a new head coach if Gareth Southgate leaves after Euro 2024Eckner was then asked whether Klopp could be a candidate for the job.

He asked how people in Germany Eckner added that if he were to accept the job, he would react like this: “I think a lot of people would understand that.

“Think about how many years he was in Liverpool –almost a decade–, so when you're there for a while you also adopt everything you like about English football.

“If I were to become England manager, I think a lot of people would be proud to have a German representing the English Football Association and the Three Lions, because it would be a novelty.”

“But obviously I don't know how I'll feel because I've never been in that situation. What I do know for sure is that I will never, ever manage a club other than Liverpool in England, 100 per cent. That's not possible.

“My love for this club, my respect for the people is too big. I couldn't. I couldn't think about it for a second. There's no chance. This is part of my life, we're part of the family, we feel at home here. There's no chance to do that.

“But will I ever go back to work? Of course, I know I can't just sit around doing nothing. Maybe I'll find something else to do.

“But I'm not going to manage a club or a national team for at least a year, that's not possible, I can't do it and I don't want to do it.”
