This has left the England international's future in doubt, as the midfielder has long been linked with a possible exit.

However, Gallagher is said to be calm about his future.

Atletico are desperate to bolster their numbers with five players already gone this summer, four of whom were on free transfers.

As an academy player, selling Gallagher would be a huge boost to Chelsea adhering to PSR rules as it would represent a 'pure gain' sale.

However, the 24-year-old has been a key player at Stamford Bridge and was the club's de facto captain last season under first-choice captain. Reece James and second choice Ben Chiwell will be unavailable for a significant part of the campaign.

That was low Mauricio Pochettinoalthough, and new coach Enzo Maresca He hasn't had the chance to observe Gallagher closely as he is currently with England in Euro 2024.

Both Tottenham and Aston Villa have been linked with the Englishman, although it is possible that they have already signed players in his position.

Spurs splashed out £40m for Archie Gray last week, while Aston Villa snapped up Ross Barkley of Luton Town.

Gallagher is a fan favourite at Chelsea and club legend Joe Cole has previously insisted they cannot let him go.

The former England international told talkSPORT last month: “Gallagher I can't leave. I know there are financial problems, but Conor Gallagher has been brilliant from start to finish.

“Everyone has been there in the last few weeks, except Conor. You see a great player when he plays in a team in trouble. Conor was still there, also as captain.

“I think it's imperative that the club keeps him.”

The midfielder missed just one Premier League game last season through suspension and has scored seven goals and assisted nine goals in all competitions.
