Donny van de Beek has completed his move to Girona from Manchester United.

Girona will pay an initial €500,000 (£423k; $542k) for Van de Beek and bonuses could increase this to €9.1million (£7.6m, $9.89m), plus a share of any sell-on.

Van de Beek’s United contract had only 12 months left to run and the 27-year-old has now signed a four-year deal with his new club.

“Today is a memorable day as my adventure at the club comes to an end,” Van de Beek posted on social media following his United exit. “I want to thank you all for your support throughout the years.

“From the moment we arrived at Manchester United, we felt extremely welcome and we are grateful for that. Thank you to everyone at the club for making us feel at home. A special thanks to all the fans that made these years unforgettable.

“Besides the football, the birth of our two children here ensures that Manchester will always have a special place in our hearts.”

Van de Beek made only two substitute appearances for United in the first half of last season before spending the second half on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt. The Bundesliga side held an €11m option to buy, with a possible €3m due in further add-ons, but declined to take that up after he registered no goals or assists in a combined four starts and four substitute appearances.

Van de Beek joined United from Ajax for £40m in the summer of 2020 but failed to establish himself at Old Trafford. He leaves the club having made only 62 appearances in four years, also featuring seven times in a six-month loan spell at Everton in 2022.

Van de Beek’s exit comes as United have agreed to pay Bologna €42.5m for Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee, who will undergo a medical on Friday. The club have also extended Tom Heaton’s contract by a year and Benfica have triggered their option to buy in left-back Alvaro Fernandez’s loan deal.

Girona, meanwhile, will play Champions League football next season after securing a third-place finish in La Liga last term. They were in the market for midfield reinforcements after Aleix Garcia joined Bayer Leverkusen last month.
