Ross Barkley started for Aston Villa as they opened their pre-season schedule with a trip to local neighbours Walsall.
The summer signing, enjoying his second spell at the club, was named in Unai Emery’s starting XI at the Poundland Bescot Stadium (ko 7.30pm).
Cameron Archer lined up in attack, with Pau Torres starting at the heart of defence and Matty Cash wearing the captain’s armband.
Youngsters Josh Feeney, Kaine Kesler Hayden, Lamare Bogarde and Jamaldeen Jimoh were also included in Villa’s line-up.
New arrivals Kosta Nedeljković, Samuel Iling Jr and Enzo Barrenechea were named among the substitutes for the encounter against the Saddlers.
