DFL to test EURO 2024 technology during DFL Super Cup

The DFL have confirmed to Sport Bild that they will be testing new technology with a chip in the football during the Super Cup in August.

The technology was already used during EURO 2024 and involves the ball feeling any sort of contact before then being visualised on screen. This was mainly used during the tournament for handballs, such as the penalty Joachim Anderson conceded in the round of 16 game against Germany.

As this is a test, the technology is unlikely to be implemented in the Bundesliga any time soon. If the test is successful, the Bundesliga could see this technology as soon as the 25/26 season.

However, one rule from the EUROs that will be implemented in the Bundesliga will be the rule that only the captains of the two teams can speak to the referee. This rule will be implemented across German football as it hopes to allow games to be restarted more quickly.

The DFL Super Cup is on August 17th and sees last season’s domestic double winners Bayer Leverkusen host last season’s runners-up VfB Stuttgart.
