Tottenham could be title contenders with a summer signing

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes Tottenham could be title contenders with Ivan Toney in attack.

Brentford Striker Toney is out of contract next summer and a number of Premier League clubs have been linked with a move for the England international.

It is understood that MacAnthony included a 30 per cent sell-on clause in the deal that sent Toney to Brentford, and Peterborough would be set for a huge windfall if the Bees sell this summer.

The Posh boss believes the 28-year-old would fit in perfectly at Spurs.

MacAnthony told talkSPORT: “The way Ange[Postecoglou]plays… if they could get rid of Richarlison, who is a striker who scores a goal in five games, and put Toney in an Ange team, I think they would have finished in the top three comfortably last year.

“It's not about the sale, people always accuse me of that. I've said it before. I think Toney would have won the title for Arsenal last year.

“I think he does it Chelsea a completely different team, with all these young players who have an international benchmark up front, a number 9.

“And I think he could be part of Team Ange's top-three, potentially competing for the title in the final month of the season.”

Spurs are still looking for a new striker after Harry Kane's transfer to Bayern Munich last summer.

Postecoglou's men were forced to share the goals last season, with captain Heung-min Son the north London side's top scorer with 17 league goals.

An out-of-form Richarlison contributed 12 goals, while Dejan Kulusevski scored eight times.

It was enough for Spurs to book their place in the Europa League but Postecoglou is expected to push on next season in the race for Champions League qualification and in the quest to win an elusive trophy for the first time since 2008.

Toney has hinted he is ready for a new challenge and his exploits with England this summer have further whetted his appetite for more games at the highest level.

The Brentford striker is yet to try his luck in Europe and with just 12 months remaining on his current deal, the Bees may be forced to cash in on their striker to avoid losing him for nothing next summer.
