Barcelona have stepped up their efforts to sign a new defensive midfielder this summer, with the emergence of Marc Casado and Marc Bernal adding to their belief that an addition is not particularly necessary. This stance also meant that they no longer pursued Joshua Kimmich.

Kimmich had appeared as a main target for Barcelona before the summer, but due to financial reasons, the possibility of signing him was discarded. However, he is likely to be re-evaluated in 2025 if he is available as a free agent – his contract with Bayern Munich expires at the end of next season.
The odds of that happening are growing. According to The ParisianKimmich has no intention of moving away from Bayern this summer, with his intention to see out the remainder of his contract before making a decision on his future.
Signing Kimmich on a free next summer would be a fantastic deal for Barcelona, especially amid the uncertainty surrounding the situation of Frenkie de Jong and Ilkay Gundogan. However, there is a long way to go before this can be considered a realistic possibility.
