The curtain comes down on Aston Villa’s USA tour with a game against Club América on Saturday night.

It’s the third and final friendly of the team’s time Stateside, with Chicago’s Soldier Field providing an iconic venue.

The Opponents

Club América are the most successful team in Mexican football, winning a record fifteen league titles, six Copa México titles, and seven Campeón de Campeones cups.

Their most recent Liga MX triumph was sealed in May when they defeated Cruz Azul 2-1 on aggregate in the final phase after topping the league standings. 

Founded in 1916, the club are one of seven teams to never have been relegated from the country’s top tier, while they’ve also enjoyed success against teams from other nations.

Ten FIFA-recognized club trophies have been won, the most for a club from CONCACAF, with a record seven CONCACAF Champions League titles, one CONCACAF Giants Cup, and two Copa Interamericanas.

América, who play their games at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, are currently managed by Brazilian André Jardine who has been in charge since 2023.

Known as the Águilas (Eagles), the team have plenty of Mexican talent in their ranks, including veteran international midfielder Jonathan dos Santos.

The Venue

The NFL and MLS fans among the Villa fanbase will be familiar with Soldier Field as one of the most iconic stadiums in America.

Both the Chicago Bears and Chicago Fire play their games at the ground, which holds 62,500.

Villans attending the game will enjoy a scenic trip to Soldier Field, with the stadium located on the banks of Lake Michigan.

The City

Chicago is the final stop on the club’s tour of the USA, and there’s plenty to enjoy in the ‘Windy City’. 

Sports is central to the city’s identity and Chicago is home to two MLB teams, the Cubs and the White Sox, NBA side Chicago Bulls, WNBA team Chicago Sky and the NHL’s Blackhawks as well as the aforementioned Bears and Fire.

A big item on most visitors’ to-do lists when visiting is to sample a deep-dish pizza from one of the many restaurants serving the world-renowned cuisine.

Lake Michigan offers stunning boat trips and watersports, while Millenium Park and the sculpture named Cloud gate but better known as ‘The Bean’ is a hotspot for tourists.

Adding to the appeal for Villa fans, Chicago and Birmingham have been Sister Cities since 1993.
