Mario Götze open to extending his stay at Eintracht Frankfurt

In an interview with Sport Bild, Mario Götze revealed he is open to extending his stay at Eintracht Frankfurt as he approaches the end of his career.

Götze’s current deal at Frankfurt expires in 2026 but there is also an option to extend the contract by another year. On if he would take that option, the 32-year-old said:

“Then I’m already old. Or let’s say, football-old.”

The 2014 World Cup winner then explained the conditions that would have to be met for him to extend his contract until 2027:

“The moment counts. At the moment I feel very comfortable here. And then it’s also a question of performance. Where do we stand as Eintracht Frankfurt? Where do we stand as a team? How is my performance? Everything else is based on that.”

However, despite feeling comfortable on the banks of the Main, a move to the MLS still appeals to Götze.

Since leaving Borussia Dortmund in 2020, Götze has been quietly living out the rest of his career, first at PSV Eindhoven where he played 52 times, scoring 12 and assisting 11 as he helped the side win the KNVB Cup. This prompted Götze’s return to Germany with Frankfurt in 2022, where he played in the Champions League and continues to be a regular fixture in Die Adler’s starting 11.

In the twilight of his career, the positive for Götze is that he has improved his availability and injuries do not seem to be as much of an issue as earlier on in his career, which hindered his ability to live up to his true potential. In the past three seasons, Götze has played over 40 games each season, a feat he had not been able to achieve since 2012-2015 at Dortmund and Bayern Munich.
