Arne Slot has become the first Liverpool manager to win his first game in charge in the Premier League in the 21st century.

The Reds got the season off to a perfect start with a 2-0 win over newly promoted Ipswich Town in the Tractor Boys' first top-flight game since 2002.

But Slot's side spoiled the party in Suffolk, with Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah guiding them to victory in the second half, with the Egyptian breaking a record in the process.

But the winger was not the only one who went down in the history books.

Jurgen Klopp's successor Slot has become the first Liverpool manager to take three points from his opening league game this century.

Klopp, who left the club at the end of last season, failed to achieve this feat as they drew 0-0 with Tottenham in their first game in 2015.

The last Reds manager to win his first game was Gerard Houllier.

That was 26 years ago, in 1998, when Houllier was in charge with Roy Evans.

Liverpool beat Southampton 2-1 at The Dell.

On that day, Karl-Heinz Riedle and Michael Owen also scored for the home team. Egil Ostenstad scored for the home team.

Rafael Benitez, Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish and Brendan Rodgers also failed to recreate that feat in their respective opening Premier League games.

But despite starting his reign on the best possible note, Slot insists his team can still improve.

He said: “I have inherited a very good team with great individual players. But these players have to understand that what they contributed in the first half is not enough.

“If they give their best, we can be really good. We showed that in the second half.”

“The goals were good but the attack that didn't end in a goal (when Luis Díaz shot over the crossbar), that's how I want to play.”
