Wissa outlast Brentford and beat Crystal Palace despite Toney's absence | Premier League

The new season may already be here, but there was a sense of déjà vu in west London until Yoane Wissa's late winner sealed Brentford's victory over Crystal Palace for the first time in almost 50 years.

Palace, who had Jean-Philippe Mateta leading the attack just nine days after lost the Olympic final For France, he should have taken the lead when Tyrick Mitchell sent Daniel Munoz's cross wide and onto the far post. New signing Daichi Kamada forced Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken into an error that led to Wissa being booked for bringing down Eberechi Eze, and the England striker fired the resulting free-kick wide.

Eze had the ball in the net with another free-kick that caught Flekken napping at his near post, but it was ruled out by Sam Barratt after he felt Will Hughes had fouled Nathan Collins as they waited for the kick to be taken.

Glasner was unimpressed when the video assistant referee adjudged the whistle to have blown for a foul before the 'goal' and his mood did not improve a minute later when Brentford went ahead. Mitchell was caught by a quick counter-attack and Wissa's deft touch allowed Mbeumo to slide into the box and beat Dean Henderson without being tackled by Guéhi.

Henderson then reacted brilliantly to deny Kristoffer Ajer a corner. Palace thought they should have been awarded a penalty at the other end when Mateta went down in the box, but replays showed Flekken had handled the ball. Schade fired wide just before Guéhi was shown a yellow card for a foul on Mads Roerslev on the stroke of half-time.

Odsonne Édouard came on for Mateta in the second half but Brentford came close to doubling their lead again when Collins failed to get a hold of Pinnock's pass. Pinnock was not much of a by-pass and turned Adam Wharton's shot away which had initially struck Roerslev. But his luck eventually ran out when Munoz headed towards the opposite goal and Pinnock watched in horror as the ball went into his own net under pressure from Édouard.

But the Frenchman was too far ahead when Eze passed to him shortly afterwards, and the assistant's flag silenced the celebrations of the Palace fans who thought they had taken the lead. Wharton, increasingly influential in midfield, had a shot from distance that Flekken turned away as the visitors smelled blood.

But it was Wissa who made the most of his chance after Henderson saved a deflected Collins shot, and Flekken made a brilliant save to deny Eze late on.
