Manuel Neuer unlikely to be involved in Germany’s Nations League games in September international break

Bild reports that it is increasingly unlikely that Manuel Neuer will be involved in Germany’s Nations League games in the September international break.

The long-time number one has yet to make a decision on his international future after Germany’s elimination in the quarter-finals of EURO 2024 against eventual winners Spain.

Neuer is expected to make his decision on his international future soon, before Julian Nagelsmann announces his squad, as confirmed by Rudi Völler (via @iMiaSanMia):

“There will certainly be a decision regarding Manuel before the next squad list is announced, which will be the week after next. Manuel deserves to have the first say on how things will continue”

However, the 38-year-old is faced with two choices. One he brings to an end his international career and retires from international football. Or two, he temporarily withdraws from the national team and does not make a commitment to continuing or retiring, thus leaving the door open for a return ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

This would then mean head coach Nagelsmann will plan for the World Cup with Marc-André ter Stegen Germany’s number one. It will also open the door for new goalkeepers to come through such as Alexander Nübel who was the member of the national team squad that was dropped ahead of EURO 2024.
