Manchester City star Phil Foden beats Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard and Cole Palmer to be crowned PFA Player of the Year

Phil Foden has beaten Manchester City team-mates Erling Haaland and Rodri to win the 2023/24 PFA Player of the Year award.

He 24 years old enjoyed an impressive season in which he helped the Citizens to a fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Foden contributed 19 top-flight goals and eight assists, including two goals in the last game against West Ham that secured City The championship.

And his dazzling performances earned him the PFA Player of the Year award at the Manchester Opera House on Tuesday night.

His latest award follows two PFA Young Player of the Year awards he picked up in 2021 and 2022.

Foden, who was one of four City players including Kyle Walker, Rodri and Haaland named in the PFA Team of the Year, was one of six nominees for the prestigious individual award.

As have Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, Chelsea star Cole Palmer (Foden's former team-mate at the Citizens) and Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, his England team-mate.

But it was Foden who emerged victorious, with the versatile striker praising City's coaches and his team-mates in his speech.

He said: “Last season was another very special one for everyone at the club.

“But now all our attention is focused on trying to achieve more successes this semester.

“Winning this award is something very special and I feel very proud and grateful for it.

“Being recognized in this way by my professional peers means everything and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me.

“I would also like to give a special thanks to Pep, the City coaches and all my team-mates, who help me to try to improve every day.

“I would also like to congratulate Kyle Walker, Rodri and Erling Haaland on being named to the PFA Team of the Year. It is fantastic to see their incredible quality recognised in this way.”

Palmer was also named PFA Young Player of the Year following his season at Stamford Bridge.

The 22-year-old has contributed 25 goals and 15 assists in all competitions for the west London side.

And it was a double joy for City after Foden's success with women's captain Khadija Shaw crowned PFA Player of the Year.

The 27-year-old Jamaican international scored 21 goals in 18 WSL games to help City to second place.

She said of her award: “I am happy and proud to have received this award; to be recognised in this way by my peers is a very special honour.

“I also want to thank my teammates and the entire coaching staff because without them this would not be possible.”
