Ralph Hasenhüttl criticises Wolfsburg fans due to a lack of atmosphere in their 3-2 loss against Bayern Munich

Following their 3-2 loss to Bayern Munich in their opening Bundesliga game, Wolfsburg boss Ralph Hasenhüttl criticised the fans due to the lack of atmosphere in the Volkswagen Arena. 

On the game (via kicker), Hasenhüttl said:

“We played a great game against a very strong team. It was a bit too quiet for me,”

The former Southampton manager then added: 

“The boys believe in themselves. We have to make the fans believe in us too.”

Speaking to ESPN reporter Archie Rhind-Tutt after the game, Hasenhüttl then repeated his desire to change the atmosphere in the Autostadt. 

Wolfsburg were second best for the whole first half against Die Rekordmeister but an early penalty in the second half gave them a shot in the arm that they needed and within 10 minutes they were 2-1 up. However, they were unable to hold on and an own goal from Jakub Kaminski and the winner from Serge Gnabry succumbed them to an opening day loss. 

Due to their relationship with Volkswagen and omittance from 50+1, Wolfsburg have never really been considered a proper club by people in Germany. Most of the people that support Wolfsburg come from the city that shares the same name, and only has a population of 124,151 (as of 2019) On top of this, the proximity to Braunschweig and Hannover means there are teams with better heritage to support nearby.
