Manchester United fans joked they wanted Michael Carrick to replace Casemiro in midfield after his silky performance against Celtic.

The former Red Devils Player and manager returned to Old Trafford on Saturday for the club's legends match against the Scottish giants.

Former captain Wayne Rooney stole the headlines after going back years to score a glorious free kick.

Fans were also treated to another impressive performance from another of Manchester United's legends and want him to play for them again.

Carrick retired in 2018 and has since moved into management, first as an assistant at Manchester United before moving to his current role as manager of Middlesbrough.

But if his performance on Saturday is anything to go by, the 43-year-old certainly still has what it takes to do a decent job in midfield.

And Manchester United fans were so impressed with his passing and movement that they want him replaced. Casemiro.

One fan wrote on X: “Finish Casemiro’s contract asap and bring in Carrick as player/manager.”

“Michael Carrick could come on the pitch for us and still perform better than Casemiro,” said a second.

A third said: “One year contract for Carrick to replace Casemiro, who says no?”

Casemiro has struggled so far this season for the Red Devils, being largely at fault for two of Liverpool's goals in his side's 3-0 defeat last weekend.

Erik ten Hag capitalised on the break and former Liverpool star Jamie Carragher said the Brazilian… 'Leave football before football leaves you' in his post-match analysis.

Many Manchester United fans argue that the club has never signed another player as good as Carrick since his retirement.

“Manchester United haven't replaced him yet,” wrote one on X.

Carrick, who joined Manchester United under manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2006, won numerous honours in his 464 appearances for the club.

He was part of the teams that won the Premier League in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013.

They also lifted the Champions League in 2008, the League Cup in 2009, 2010 and 2017, the FA Cup in 2016 and the Europa League in 2017.
