Former Tottenham midfielder joins Spanish basketball's minor leagues in surprising career move at 36

Former Premier League midfielder Etienne Capoue has joined a new club… a third-tier basketball team.

The 36-year-old was recently released by the Spanish team. Villarrealto put an end to his three-and-a-half-year stay at the Estadio de la Cerámica.

During his time at Villarreal, he helped the Yellow Submarine win its first and only trophy in its 101-year existence.

He started in the Europa League final victory over Manchester United in 2021, just a few months after arriving from Watford.

But incredibly, he could now be about to embark on a new career in basketball with small Spanish team CB Jovens L'Eliana.

That's according to the media Reliefwho has declared that he has changed the football field for the basketball court.

It has been claimed that the Frenchman, who played for two years in Tottenham Between 2013 and 2015, he spent the last week training with the club, which plays in the third division of the Spanish basketball pyramid.

The media outlet even claimed that he participated in a friendly match last weekend, which his team won 78-70 against CB Morvedre.

This was supported by a Instagram Post shared by CB Jovens L'Eliana, where Capoue can be seen wearing the club's colours.

Although it has been said that he is not yet registered with the team, meaning he cannot play in any competitive matches.

It remains to be seen whether the former Spurs and Watford star will officially link up with the basketball team.

Although a source from CB Jovens L'Eliana clarified Capoue's mentality by telling Relevo that he has the firm intention of “ending his days as a footballer.”

They also said: “We don't want to put pressure on him. He told us he wanted to play, that he wanted to train.”

If Capoue signs an official contract with CB Jovens L'Eliana, he would fulfil a childhood dream of playing basketball.

It was only last year that he spoke of his love for the sport, although he refused to rule out a possible career change.

He told Relevo: “My dream when I was a kid was to play NBA basketball. Clearly.

“That was my dream. But it's still my dream, right? I don't know.”
