Could Manuel Neuer already return to the German national team?

After it was confirmed that Marc-André ter Stegen will miss the next few months with a knee injury, Germany now has a goalkeeper problem.

ter Stegen was set to be Germany’s number one for the World Cup cycle and for the 2026 World Cup, but he will now miss the first portion of qualifying with a knee injury. This could present an opportunity for one of Alexander Nübel, Kevin Trapp or Oliver Baumann to be interim number one.

But, could Manuel Neuer return?

Via @iMiaSanMia, the DFB are currently not discussing potentially bringing Neuer back into the national team after he only retired earlier this month. When asked about returning earlier today by SID Sportsnews, Neuer himself also did not comment on the matter.

If we are being honest, it is probably best Neuer does not return. The 38-year-old was the first-choice keeper for 14 years and it is time for other goalkeepers like Nübel who is performing very well internationally to show that they have a chance to be the number one when ter Stegen eventually retires.
