Liverpool continued their winning streak with a resounding 5-1 victory over West Ham United in their Carabao Cup third-round tie on Wednesday night.
The Hammers took the lead through Jarrell Quansah's own goal in the 21st minute, but the Reds responded quickly with Diogo Jota's equaliser four minutes later. Jota immediately doubled the club's lead after the break.
Mohamed Salah Liverpool extended their lead in the 74th minute before Edson Alvarez was sent off. Cody Gakpo rounded off a fantastic display with two goals in the 90th and 93rd minutes.
In his post-match press conference, coach Arne Slot was pleased with braces from Diogo Jota and Gakpo. He was particularly impressed by the latter, who cleared the ball in his own area before scoring his brace in the last moment.
He said according to Liverpool Official Website: “He scored two really good goals and Cody I think it was 10, 15 or 20 minutes before the end when he cleared the ball in his own 18-yard box and that's also what he brings to our game apart from scoring two..”
Gakpo had a spectacular performance with 94% of those approved completed and 100% successful long balls. He scored with 2 of his 4 shots on goal and looked lively on the left side of the Reds' attack with 100% of his shots won.
The 25-year-old has been knocking on the door for a starting spot in the Premier League And it will be interesting to see whether he has convinced Slot to start him in the next game against Wolves away from home.
Luis Diaz has taken over the left wing spot thanks to his stellar performances. Darwin Nunez could make way for Gakpo, but Jota could also challenge for the same spot after scoring twice against the Hammers.
Liverpool suffered a major setback with a dismal 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest after the international fixtures, but have responded in exemplary fashion with three wins in three different competitions under Slot.
