Valencia to give interested clubs the opportunity to sign a highly qualified defender for 25 million euros
During the summer, Cristhian Mosquera became a main target for Atletico Madrid. However, they were unable to complete a deal for the young defender as Valencia's €25m asking price was not met.
Mosquera is highly regarded in Spanish football, having broken through at Los Che in the last 12-18 months. Club officials know that he is a player who is wanted, and therefore an agreement on a new contract is sought, as Ser Deportivo Valencia (via AS Diary).
Interestingly, Valencia pulled a “renewal” with Mosquera, since the intention is to reduce his release clause to 25 million euros, which has been his asking price in recent times. Essentially, this is seen as an incentive for the 20-year-old to sign a long-term contract, which removes the danger of losing him for free in 2026 – that's when his current deal expires.
Valencia they are determined to get their money when Mosquera inevitably moves on. To do this, a new contract must be agreed, hence the release clause compromise.
