Real Madrid were left devastated afterwards it has been confirmed that Dani Carvajal has suffered a serious ACL injury during Saturday's win over Villarreal. The veteran right-back is expected to miss the rest of the season as he becomes the fourth Los Blancos player in 14 months to rupture his anterior cruciate ligament.

Carvajal's absence means that Lucas Vazquez will become Real Madrid's defender, at least until the winter transfer window. A signing at that stage cannot be ruled out, although the club's sporting department is unlikely to make any move unless it is deemed absolutely necessary.

Ace for ReliefAn interesting in-house solution is for Eder Militao to move to the right side of the defense. The 26-year-old has experience playing as a right-back for Brazil, so is an option for Carlo Ancelotti in cases where Lucas' minutes need to be managed.

Militao's move to right wing would mean Aurelien Tchouameni is used in defense more often – at least until David Alaba returns from his own ACL injury. For now at least, Real Madrid have the idea to cover Carvajal, although they can opt to do well in the transfer market in January.
