According to Sky Germany, Bayer Leverkusen are already planning for the departure of their head coach, Xabi Alonso.
Over the summer, Bayern Munich attempted to lure Alonso away from the BayArena, as they were looking to find a successor for Thomas Tuchel.
Nevertheless, Alonso elected to remain at Leverkusen in order to defend the Bundesliga title as well as tackle the Champions League with Die Werkself.
However, there is now a belief within the club that the Spaniard will be difficult to retain at the end of this campaign, and they have, therefore, been on the hunt for his future replacement.
It is understood that VfB Stuttgart head coach Sebastian Hoeneß and Sandro Wagner, the current assistant head coach to Julain Nagelsmann for the German national team, are the two favourites to succeed Alonso in the summer.
As stated in the report, Leverkusen are said to be impressed by Hoeneß’s courageous and offensive style of football, while Wagner is also held in high esteem by those in charge at the club.
Despite this, there is still the possibility that Alonso will remain at BayArena due to his contract not being set to expire until 2026, but Manchester City and Real Madrid are prepared to go all out in order to tempt him away from the Bundesliga.
