A Manchester United manager expressed the club's discontent over the poor start to the season with Erik ten Hag.

United They have won just three of their first eight Premier League games and are 12th in the table, six points off the top four.

They came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 at the weekend, but this was preceded by a run of five wins in all competitions.

This form has understandably worried fans, considering it follows a summer in which the club spent around £179m on new signings.

United are a shadow of their former self, the dominant force under Sir Alex Ferguson, and their communications director Toby Craig has revealed his frustration at the club's progress.

“Clearly we are not happy with the start of the season for the men's first team and the results are not what we want,” he said in a fans forum through the Night standard. “There is an enormous amount of change taking place.

“We believe we came out of the summer transfer window with a stronger squad, but it is still evolving with several younger players who will continue to improve.

“So there have been changes on the field, but also off the field with (sporting director) Dan Ashworth and (technical director) Jason Wilcox joining the club. “They are transforming our sporting structure off the field.

“We know there is still a lot to do. The women's first team has started the season well, with a 100 percent result so far in the WSL.

“While the main focus of the fan forum has always been fan issues, we will endeavor to keep the forum informed of football developments and provide access to football leaders from time to time.”

Craig's comments came before the win over Brentford and Ten Hag. scathing rant towards the media for the coverage of his position at Old Trafford.

There was speculation that the Dutchman would not remain in his position beyond the October international break, given the poor results.

However, Ten Hag hit back during his pre-Brentford press conference when he said: “The noise is only coming from some of you in the media.

“Creating stories and fairy tales and spreading lies. The journalists did not believe me. I saw the reports. Of course, we are not happy with the situation we find ourselves in.

“In short, internally we are calm and serene. We are sticking to the plan and we are very convinced that it will be a success.”

Victory at the weekend will have relieved some of the pressure on Ten Hag, although a cloud of uncertainty is likely to remain.

United's next game takes on former boss Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday, LIVE on talkSPORT, a competition they are yet to win this season.

They have drawn against FC Twente and Porto in their first two European matches, despite taking the lead in both, and as a result are 21st in the new league stage standings.
