Real Madrid’s Rodrygo out of El Clasico against Barcelona with right leg injury

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo will miss Saturday’s El Clasico against Barcelona with a right leg injury.

Rodrygo pulled up with a muscular injury late in Madrid’s 5-2 Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night and was replaced by Aurelien Tchouameni in the 85th minute.

The 23-year-old will undergo an MRI scan on Thursday to reveal the extent of his injury, with tests not possible beforehand due to the possibility of internal bleeding obscuring results.

Rodrygo has been involved in 13 matches for Madrid this campaign, including all 10 of their La Liga fixtures, although just six of his appearances have been as a starter in Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

The Brazilian’s absence for Saturday’s home match against Barcelona may mean either Tchouameni or Eduardo Camavinga, neither of whom started against Dortmund, come into the starting line-up with Jude Bellingham pushed into a more advanced midfield role, and Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe leading the line.

Madrid trail Barcelona by three points at the top of La Liga, while a home win on Saturday would see them move to the top of the standings.

Ancelotti’s side then travel to Valencia on November 2 followed by a Champions League home match against AC Milan three days later and a home league game against Osasuna on October 9 before the November international break.
