Danny Murphy could barely contain his excitement after watching talkSPORT presenter Simon Jordan eat his words about Anthony Gordon in real time.
Gordon signed a new long-term contract with Newcastle on Tuesday to squash speculation linking him with a move to his boyhood club. Liverpool.
The 23-year-old joined the Magpies from Everton in January 2023 for £40 million and has made 26 target contributions to Eddie Howeon the side since then.
Murphy noted that many had criticized how much Newcastle shelled out for Gordon, but he felt otherwise, stating that the fee “could be a cut”.
Jordan responded by claiming Gordon was “a good player” but not a “world-beater”, prompting talkSPORT co-presenter Jim White to remind him of a controversial claim made when the 23-year-old first moved on.
White told Jordan that he labeled Gordon a “rat” and said the winger would “get what he deserved.”
“I don't remember suggesting Antonio Gordon “It was a rat,” Jordan responded.
“I could have said rats abandoning a sinking ship, because Everton at the time was a sinking ship. But context is very important.”
Fortunately for White and Murphy, talkSPORT producers managed to unearth the original audio of Jordan's comments about Gordon in 2023.
It's safe to say that the first Crystal Palace The owner was a little blushing.
“I don't like the way he's behaved with Everton,” Jordan told talkSPORT in 2023.
“I don't like the way he has behaved with Everton. I can understand that everyone, like rats, wants to abandon a sinking ship, but you are supposed to be able to help that football club, not harm it with your behavior. And I hope you get what you deserve, reap what you sow.”
White responded at the time by suggesting Gordon wasn't a rat, to which Jordan replied: “Well, he is a bit, isn't he? Everton have given him a chance.
“I know danny murphyand I have to listen to the players who know much more than me about the ability of the players, believe that he is going to be a top player.
“But I think he still has a lot to prove and, ultimately, Everton deserve the player to treat him a little better and with a little more respect.”
When the clip ended, Murphy was left in stitches and raised his arms in triumph.
“Not only did you confirm what we said, but you also confirmed my analysis that Gordon is a top-notch player,” Murphy said.
“It was a double whammy!”
Murphy later added, “That was one of my favorite moments in all the years I've been here.”
However, Jordan was quick to point out that “context is everything.”
“I didn't call him a rat,” Jordan said.
“I suggested that rats abandon a sinking ship as an analogy. I didn't deny the context of saying he gets what he deserves, I wanted to remember how I said it.
“The real context was that he was asking for a move and I felt Everton deserved more respect.”
