“It seemed like they were holding us hostage”: Manchester United fans caught in chaos at Fenerbahce stadium

Manchester United fans were left “furious” after having to leave Fenerbahce's stadium one by one hours after the final whistle.

The Red Devils drew 1-1 against their former manager Jose Mourinho's side in the Europa League on Thursday, with Christian Eriksen opening the scoring before Youssef En-Nesyri equalized.

Mourinho was sent off and gave a fiery interview in which he sarcastically criticized the referee and gave him a strange statement on management in UEFA competitions.

But the drama did not end when Mourinho walked away from the microphone, as more than two thousand Man United fans felt “hostage” as they tried to leave the stadium.

Images on social media show Red Devils fans slowly moving towards an exit at the opposite end – a narrow door with authorities standing outside.

One video had the title: “manchester united “The fans were forced to leave the Fenerbahce stadium one at a time, two hours after the final whistle.”

And several fans spoke to talkSPORT chief football correspondent Alex Crook about the unpleasant situation.

One supporter said: “(The police) spoke to us that day and they told us we would wait up to 60 minutes (to wait to leave after the final whistle).

“I think we expected that. Normally I would say 20 to 30 minutes (to leave) abroad. But we got to about 45 minutes in and it seemed a bit busy.

“But then I think it took us an hour. I think we were playing about an hour and 40 after the game.

“Everyone was pretty nice, but there was just no communication, nothing. We were just sitting there waiting to get home.

“I think we worked about five hours on the ground and we weren't too early either.”

Supporters were also reportedly forced to take public transport from the ground, despite some staying a short distance away.

“Then they forced me to get on the buses,” continued the follower, who was accompanied by a 16-year-old boy. “Even though we were a 15-minute walk from the ground, we deliberately planned where we would stay.

“It just felt like you were being held hostage to something that didn't have to be that way.

“There was no Fenerbahce The fans left around the stadium when we left. “They could have easily let us go.”

And while Man United fans handled the situation well, the conditions of the stadium were also said to be a problem.

A second fan said: “I think United fans were getting angry because they were forced to do something they maybe didn't want to do against their own will after being locked up for so long. I mean, even coming out of the ground, it was like a bottleneck. It was just an entry, right?

“A door to take out 2,500 fans. You can see how people stayed calm, right? The police were very good to us, I must say. But even the level of the facilities there, the bathrooms, we were ankle-deep in the water afterwards and everything else, yeah.

“So yeah, to be fair to the United fans, I thought they handled it pretty well and kept their cool. And so did the police. But the whole situation could have been avoided and I could have had an earlier night and maybe joined in on a little more wrestling than we did.”

Man United are 21st in the Europa League table, four points clear of the play-off places and entering the qualification places.
