Erik ten Hag was dismissed by Man United on Monday after winning just one of their last eight games, and the last straw apparently was the 2-1 defeat against West Ham on Sunday.

Former Red Devils star Ruud van Nistelrooy will be in caretaker charge until a replacement is found, with his first test coming against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup last 16.

German manager Nagelsmann has been consistently linked with the Manchester club over the years, especially since the arrival of INEOS due to its data-driven approach.

But ironically, Man United may have to rely on their former Liverpool nemesis Klopp to land the former Bayern Munich boss.

Discussing who could replace Ten Hag in White and Jordan, the former Crystal Palace chairman said: “You mentioned Nagelsmann and there is an interesting thought process through this.

“There is an exclusion in Jurgen Klopp's contract with Red Bull (for the Germany job).

“We look at Nagelsmann to Man United and Klopp to Germany.”

Klopp ended his time at Liverpool at the end of last season, citing running out of steam after nine years and not wanting to do the job on “three wheels”.

In July, the German confirmed that he was “finished” as a coach. He then joined Red Bull, which owns a network of clubs around the world, as director of global football.

However, reports earlier this month suggested that Klopp's contract with Red Bull includes a clause that would allow him to leave if the German national team came calling.

However, his old friend Wojtek Czyz said Klopp did not have his eye on the Germany job at the time of his appointment at Red Bull.

The Paralympic champion, who met Klopp before the latter headed to Liverpool, said The Sports Agents Podcast: “I can tell you one thing about this: what I think about Jurgen.

“Jürgen is not thinking about the German team now. “Jurgen will be 100 percent committed to succeeding in this role he has now taken on.”

Simon Jordan is not surprised that Manchester United have sacked Erik ten Hag

He added: “In the future, many things can happen, and everything will be done and right at the right time. That is why now there is no discussion about the future of the German team.”

talkSPORT understands Man United are keen to entertain pay compensation to get who they want.

But if Nagelsmann wants to leave Germany for Manchester, he and United may have to wait for Klopp to be willing to take on his current role.

Nagelsmann, 37, led Bayern to the Bundesliga title in 2022. He took over in Germany in September 2023 and in April extended his contract with Germany until 2026 for the next World Cup.

He led the Germans to the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 on home soil, losing 2-1 in extra time to eventual champions Spain.
