Roy Keane delivered a seemingly cryptic message on Instagram just hours after Erik ten Hag was sacked by Manchester United.
The giants of the Premier League announced on Monday morning that the Dutchman has left the club after just over two seasons at the helm.
ten witches The departure came a day after United suffered their fourth Premier League defeat of the campaign, 2-1 against West Ham.
Ruud van Nistelrooy was previously his assistant but has now been put in interim charge of his former club.
Speculation over Ten Hag's future at Old Trafford had been rife for months despite him extending his contract until 2026 in the summer.
So the news of his firing may not have surprised fans, and hours after the announcement Keane gave fans their point of view, albeit in somewhat strange circumstances
in a post on Instagramwhere Keane stands on the field with his hood over his coat, the club legend said: “In good teams, coaches hold players accountable. In great teams, players hold players accountable.”
Keane's cryptic message may hint that he believes United's problems are down to both Ten Hag and the players, not just the former.
This season they have scored just eight goals in nine Premier League games, the third-fewest of the 20 teams.
United's weekend defeat to West Ham means they have also won just once in their last eight games in all competitions.
Keane recently revealed that he was concerned about Ten Hag's future at the club following the 1-1 Europa League draw against FC Twente.
“When the players came out after the game, I think it was (Christian) Eriksen, again a really poor game, oh my God,” he said in the Stay with football podcast.
“When the players come out and say, 'I think they might have wanted it more than we did,' at that point I gave up.
“If that's the noise coming out of the locker room, then no wonder the manager is in trouble, no wonder they're not winning football games, that's all.”
“But that's where United are, just at random,” he added. “They will win some games but lose many, that's all.
“They're too open, they're not athletic, they don't score enough goals, I'm not sure there's a team there.”
Ten Hag won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup during his time at United, who are now set to search for a new permanent replacement.
talkSPORT understands Brentford's Thomas Frank has admirers among the United hierarchy, while sporting director Dan Ashworth worked successfully with Eddie Howe at Newcastle.
United have also recently shown interest in German manager Julian Nagelsmann.
Sources in Spain claim that former Barcelona manager Xavi has held talks over a move to Old Trafford.
Xavi has maintained a close relationship with United chief executive Omar Berrada since his time at the Camp Nou.
