According to Sky Germany, Bayern Munich defender Josip Stanišić has suffered a setback on his return from injury.
Last season, the 24-year-old spent the campaign on loan at Bayer Leverkusen, where, after a slow start with Die Werkself, Stanišić eventually established himself as a key part of Xabi Alonso’s side.
Nevertheless, despite aiding Leverkusen in their unbeaten league and cup triumph—including scoring a goal against Der Rekordmeister in the Bundesliga—the Croatian international was not courted by the German champions in the summer.
However, after remaining in Bavaria, Stanišić was unable to reignite his Bayern career, suffering a torn lateral knee ligament after his first appearance back in a Bayern shirt.
With a DFB-Pokal game under his belt, there were hopes that he would soon be able to make a return, but prior to Bayern’s second-round DFB-Pokal game against Mainz, sporting director Christoph Freund confirmed that it would “take a few more weeks” until Stanišić will be back on the pitch.
While this setback will frustrate the defender and those in charge at the club, it is understood that Sacha Boey will soon be integrated back into the squad, offering Vincent Kompany the option of a recognised right-back.
