Are Borussia Dortmund lining up Nuri Şahin’s successor?

After Borussia Dortmund’s elimination from the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday evening away to VfL Wolfsburg, Sebastian Kehl, the club’s sporting director, made it abundantly clear that Nuri Şahin’s future at the Westfalenstadion was safe.

However, so far, Şahin’s has guided BvB to their worst league start since the 2014/15 campaign, while defeat in the DFB-Pokal signalled the club’s worst performance in the competition since the 2010/11 season when they lost to Kickers Offenbach on penalties in the second round.

This has, therefore, seen calls for Dortmund to sack Şahin and find an appropriate successor, with suggestions that Roger Schmidt, who recently left Benfica, should be an option for the Black and Yellow’s.

According to Sky Germany, it is understood that the head coach is in the final stages of terminating his contract with the Portuguese outfit and would be available should BvB come calling.

Nevertheless, as stated in the report, neither Dortmund nor Schmidt are interested in working together as of yet, with the latter wanting to take a break from coaching until the summer.

Despite this, should Dortmund continue to stumble under Şahin, then the chances of looking elsewhere for a head coach would certainly increase.
