Borussia Dortmund’s Donyell Malen internally criticised for his recent performances

Bild reports that Borussia Dortmund winger Donyell Malen is beginning to receive internal criticism in regard to his recent performances.

The winger only made the bench for the injury-hit Dortmund in their 2-1 win against RB Leipzig at the weekend, before being subbed on in the latter stages of the second half. This is related to his performance against Augsburg the weekend before, where despite his goal, his performance lacked commitment as he only ran eight kilometres in the 2-1 loss.

However, Malen’s performance against Augsburg is not an outlier. The Dutch international has been very inconsistent since he moved to Dortmund, very rarely being able to string together a run of good performances.

Off the pitch, Malen is also said to be a somewhat controversial figure. The 25-year-old is seen as a loner in the squad but more specifically, he has repeatedly tried to force a move away from the Signal Iduna Park but he has only been able to attract interest from clubs competing for Europa League places.

It is looking increasingly likely that Malen will leave Dortmund in the summer and it is also increasingly likely for Dortmund that they will in fact lose money on the €30m they spent on the winger when they brought him in from PSV in 2021.
