All Manchester United players should fear for their jobs as Ruben Amorim takes over as head coach next week.
This is what the former Red Devils midfielder thinks nicky butt who has taken an expert look at recent events at Old Trafford.
Butt, who made 387 appearances for United, knows all about the high expectations at the club, having lifted six Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Champions League during his tenure with Sir Alex Ferguson.
Butt admits that standards have dropped a lot since his time at the club, something that must change if Amorim is to help return the glory days to Old Trafford.
And according to Butt, that must start with the players, some of whom seem too comfortable with their status in the starting XI.
“I think regardless of what decade we are in at Man United, every player should have the impression that someone can come and take their place at any time,” Butt told talkSPORT.
“I think that's what big football clubs are like, no matter who you are.
“There are maybe like two or three players in each generation who know they're good, like Roy Keane and Eric Cantona.
“But the rest of the players in a team like Man United must always be looking over their shoulders thinking that at any moment a youngster appears or the manager is going to buy a world star.
“We have to get back to that at Man United,” he added. “Everyone should be nervous about what will happen in the next nine to 12 months.
“Each and every Man United player is not playing at the level they should.”
Butt's dismay over Manchester United's current plight is best reflected in his claim that none of the current crop would make it into the city of manchester, Liverpool either Arsenal equipment.
“It kills me to say it,” Butt said. “I have been a manchester united Fan since he was six years old. You will say that Bruno (Fernandes) is a fantastic player, and he is, he is a great talent.
“You could say one or two more, but they don't stand out, they don't perform at the highest level and you can see at the end of each season how many Man United players make the Team of the Year.” ?
“There is none and it's sad to say, but it's a fact.”
Butt has urged the club to give Amorim time to implement his own methods and form a team capable of challenging for the title.
Since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the club's longest-serving manager, having spent three years in the dugout.
Jose Mourinho and Erik ten Hag They were only given two and a half years to turn around the club's fortunes.
Louis van Gaal spent two years in charge at Old Trafford, while David Moyes had to endure a miserable nine months.
When asked what Amorim will inherit upon his arrival at Old Trafford next week, Butt was damning in his response.
“An average team if I'm honest. A team of individuals who seem to play for themselves,” he said.
“I watched Sunday's game (against Chelsea). I would never say that people don't work hard and run, but I think they do it on their own. “They don’t do it as a unit and I don’t know what Man United is.”
