Hector Herrera is a player who Atletico Madrid supporters will be very familiar. The Mexican midfielder was at the club from 2019 to 2022, at which stage he left to join MLS side Houston Dynamo. Over the past two years, he has become a key player for the Texas-based side, although his time is now up – and it will end in disgrace.
Last weekend, Herrera's Houston Dynamo side were in MLS play-off action against the Seattle Sounders. With the match ready at 0-0, he was sent off for spitting at the referee on the field – he was initially missed, by the VAR made the call for the dismissal.

Houston Dynamo would continue to lose on penalties, meaning that they are now out of contention to win the MLS Cup 2024. Days after the incident, it was announced that Herrera would leave, as his contract would not be renewed.

It is not known how much the spitting incident contributed to Herrera's exit, but considering he was a key player, it is likely that it had a significant effect.
